THE DEPENDENCE OF BEARING VALUE ON DIAMETER OF DRIVEN STEEL PILES IN SAND
Abstract
Axial compression tests were performed on open- and closed-ended piles with different diameters. The results of these tests have been analyzed considering the effects of pile diameter and pile end condition on the pile’s bearing capacity. Nine methods to determine axial pile capacity based on the soil properties were compared with the measured results. The results obtained show that piles driven in dense sand can develop significantly higher bearing capacities than the calculated ones (e.g. API). In sand, open-ended piles typically develop lower capacities compared to closed-ended piles as the pile diameter increases.
